Keeping your home clean can feel overwhelming, but with a few strategies, you can transform your space into a sparkling sanctuary. These tips will help you streamline your routine, make sure you have the right tools on hand and break it into manageable chunks.
1. Create a Cleaning Schedule
One of the best ways to keep your home clean is to establish a regular cleaning schedule. Break tasks down into monthly, seasonal and annual lists to help you stay organized.
DAILY / WEEKLY
- Make the beds, do the dishes, and tidy up common areas.
- Vacuum, sweep/mop, dust surfaces, and clean bathrooms.
- Disinfect high-touch areas frequently like light switches and doorknobs
- Dust or vacuum air vents to improve air quality.
EVERY 3 MONTHS
- Clean and seal all natural stone countertops/tiled backsplashes/tiled showers
- Rotate sofa cushions
- Wipe down blinds/shutters
EVERY 6 MONTHS
- Check/replace water filter
- Clean windows
- Check/replace smoke alarm battery
- Clean gutters
SEASONAL MAINTENANCE
- Garden maintenance
- Tree trimming
- Pool cleaning and chemical checks
- Cover outdoor patio furniture (fall)
ANNUAL MAINTENANCE
- Air-conditioning service
- Pest and termite check/spray
- Deck paint and seal/recoating
- Pressure wash driveway, sidewalk, patios
- Carpet cleaning
- Curtain dry cleaning
- Hot water system maintenance/check
- Pool maintenance/check
2. Declutter First
You may have heard the saying “Cluttered House, Cluttered Mind”. Before you dive into cleaning, take the time to declutter. It will make your cleaning much more efficient. Go through each room and remove items that don’t belong. Consider using the “one in, one out” rule: for every new item you bring into your home, remove an old one. Make a donation pile to take to a local charity thrift store.
3. Use the Right Tools
Invest in quality cleaning supplies that make the job easier. Here are some essentials:
- Microfiber Cloths: Great for dusting and cleaning surfaces without scratching.
- All-Purpose Natural Cleaner: Versatile and effective for most surfaces.
- Vacuum with Attachments: Ideal for carpets, upholstery, and hard-to-reach areas.
- Mop and Bucket: A must for maintaining clean floors.
4. Beware of harsh chemicals
Consider using natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. These can effectively clean and disinfect your home without harsh chemicals. Always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines first for any specific instructions pertaining to your material.
NATURAL STONE
Natural stone must be regularly cleaned and sealed to maintain and protect. It is porous and any harsh chemical cleaners should be avoided. Anything acidic (like citrus), should be wiped up immediately and water should not be left to stand. Always follow the manufacturer’s specifications for your specific stone.
WOOD FLOORS
Wood floors can be cleaned with Bona floor cleaner diluted with water (follow instructions on the packing). It is not recommended to use Murphy’s oil soap or any other waxy polish as residue will build up.
DUSTING SURFACES
Using dry and dampened microfiber cloths will make it easier to remove dust. These dusting tips will help to lower allergens and improve your home’s air quality.
WINDOWS AND MIRRORS
Use a gentle glass cleaner or even just a vinegar/water mix. Ammonia should not be used on mirrors as it can cause ‘black edge’. If your windows include privacy film, use a gentle non ammonia cleaning product or even simple water with a soft cloth.
FURNITURE
Use coasters, placemats and tablecloths as a way to preserve your furniture finish. Use a natural furniture cleaner (not a polish) to avoid waxy build up.
5. Use the Top-Down Approach
When cleaning, always start from the top and work your way down. Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures first, then move to surfaces like tables and countertops. Finally, clean the floors. This way, any dust or debris that falls will be cleaned up during the final step.
6. Don’t Forget your upholstery
SPILLS
Use a clean and cool, damp cloth to soak up the liquid. Blot from the outside and work your way in. Don’t scrub, but gently press the cloth and blot the stain instead. Always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines as certain materials may have specific instructions.
VACUUM YOUR UPHOLSTERY
Lift each cushion and vacuum up any debris you find. We recommend using the hand-held nozzle on your vacuum cleaner to gently lift dust and crumbs.
ROTATE AND FLIP SOFA CUSHIONS
Fluff and rotate your sofa cushions every 3 months. Tug each cushion to reshape them. Pat the cushions all around, and even toss and catch them to add some air and ‘fluffiness’ back. Flip them and make sure all of the feathers inside are evenly distributed. If any of the cushions are interchangeable based on size and shape, swap them in order to prevent the most used cushions from showing any signs of wear.
KNEAD AND FLUFF ACCENT PILLOWS
Toss the accent pillows around to fluff them back up until they feel light, airy and brand-new!
WINDOW TREATMENTS
Gently vacuum your window treatments every few months with a soft bristled vacuum attachment. Label it to be used for upholstery only to keep it clean. Vacuum your draperies, blinds and upholstered headboards to remove dust.
7. Make It Fun
Cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore! Make the process enjoyable by playing your favorite music, listening to an audiobook or a podcast. You’ll find that time flies when your mind is distracted with something enjoyable.
Following these tips will help you maintain a clean, well organized home. The key is to be consistent. By establishing a routine and incorporating these practices into your daily life, your home will feel relaxing and serene.
