Storage Solutions: How to Keep Clutter out of Sight

As a mom of 3, I get the struggles we all have with keeping our homes tidy.  One of my favorite ways to create cleanliness and clarity in the chaos is well thought out custom cabinetry.

Living Room: Custom Cabinets
While the TV and fireplace are the main focal point of the living room, consider adding custom built-ins flanking the sides and/or running under the TV if there’s no fireplace. For the lower cabinets, I recommend adding closed storage to hide toys, games, and miscellaneous items. Open shelves on top can display decorative items or books, keeping the space visually appealing while maintaining functionality.

Kitchen: Organization and Dedicated Spaces
Utilize custom cabinetry to maximize storage. Consider deep drawers for pots and pans, pull-out shelves for pantry items, and vertical dividers for baking sheets. A designated “charging station” within the cabinetry can keep electronics organized and out of sight.

Entrance from the Garage: Family Drop Zone
This is your main dump zone in most homes and is a great place to add custom cabinetry and storage. Use open or closed cubbies with multiple hooks for coats. For shoes, I recommend open shelves, drawers or doors with a cut out for air flow. I have 2 teen boys and let me tell you…those shoes need to breathe.

Playroom: Toy Store
Built-in benches with storage underneath can provide seating while hiding toys. Open cubbies/cabinetry can keep items off the floor and easy to access, while also creating a clean look. Incorporate colorful bins for a fun way to organize smaller items. I’ve used some great desks and organizing stations from IKEA that made spectacular low budget lego stations and storage.

Bedrooms: Thoughtful Closet Design
Opt for custom closet systems that include shelves, drawers, and hanging space tailored to your family’s needs. Lighting is crucial in closets and be sure to take the cabinets to the ceiling to store seasonal clothes or extra linens, keeping clutter at bay.

Bathroom: Practical Cabinet Designs
Custom cabinetry can help maximize space in smaller bathrooms. Consider shallow drawers for makeup and toiletries, a drawer with an outlet/organizer for curling irons/blow dryers, a trash pullout under the sink and then tall cabinets for towels and linens. A built-in hamper can keep dirty clothes out of sight while maintaining a tidy appearance.

By investing in custom cabinetry, you can create a beautiful and organized home that works for your family’s lifestyle. Not only does it reduce clutter, but it also adds a personal touch that enhances your space.
