The main goal of Feng Shui is to create balance and harmony in your environment with the 5 elements (fire, earth, metal, water and wood). With water being the strongest element in a bathroom, how do you create balance in your home design? I’ve spent some time studying up on the aspects of Feng Shui in order to incorporate them into my bathroom designs for my clients in the Pittsburgh area. The vanity below was inspired by the bathrooms at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, where marine grade teak was incorporated into the design.
Here are some tips to consider:
- Balance water energy with wood and earth (i.e. wood vanity and a plant).
- Rounded bathroom furniture, fixtures, accessories and/or mirrors help calm the space.
- Add a green plant in the bathroom by the sink like a fern. Plants receive water and transform it into uplighting qi, balancing out the drain. Indoor plants are especially important in Pittsburgh, where we have so much gray dreary winter weather.
- Water = Wealth. If you have a leaking faucet, pipe or toilet, fix it immediately as the leak symbolizes a loss of money in Feng Shui.
- Consider safety and function at every step.
- Use a warm, earthy and grounding spray, candle or aromatherapy scent.
- Keep your bathroom door and toilet seat closed.
- Keep clutter to a minimum.
Incorporating these concepts into your bathroom design will provide an oasis that promotes a sense of balance and harmony. A well thought out design will create a space that reflects tranquility and balance in your life.
